چکیده

Ubiquitous computing technologies offer the promise of extending the benefits of computing to workers who do not spend their time at a desktop environment. In this paper, we review the results of an extended study of nonoffice workers across a variety of work domains, noting some key characteristics of their practices and environments, and examining some challenges to delivering on the ubicomp promise. Our research points to three important challenges that must be addressed, these include: (a) variability across work environments; (b) the need to align disparate, sometimes conflicting interests; and (c) the need to deal with what appear to be informal ways of creating and sharing knowledge. As will be discussed, while daunting, these challenges also point to specific areas of focus that might benefit the design and development of future ubicomp systems.

Toward a Shared Model for Wide Area Interoperability of Ubiquitous Computing Environments

Despite many years of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) middleware research, deployment of such systems has not been widespread. For such systems to become more widely adopted, we argue that a shared model for ubicomp environments, and a system to bridge such environments between network and administrative domains is needed. This paper presents work in progress toward deriving a shared environment...

Ubiquitous Media and the Active Office

The groundwork for UbiVid was laid by research into in "media spaces" (Gaver et al., 1992; Mantei et al., 1991; Stults, 1986; Bly, Harrison & Irwin, 1993). The ideas that we discuss build upon this work. We argue that UbiComp and UbiVid are two sides to the same story. Together, they make up something that may best be called Ubiquitous Media, or UbiMedia. Our belief is that this notion of Ubiqu...

Assessment of Noise Effect on Employee Comfort in an Open-Plan Office: Validation of an Assessment Questionnaire

Background: Today, open-plan offices are among the most common work environments. Although the noise in these environments is usually below the standard level, it is one of the critical annoyance factors due to the nature of the mental work. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess noise effects on employee comfort and validate the Persian version of the assessment of noise effects on employee c...

Evaluation of estimation models for acoustic reverberation time in educational and office environments

Noise pollution is considered as one of the most annoying factors in educational and office environments. In these environments where learning processes and intellectual activities are ongoing, an effective acoustic design is necessary. The aim of this paper is to assess the reverberation time as one of the important indicators in describing the acoustic characteristics of rooms. In this study,...

Adapting Ubicomp Systems to a Common Model

Until recently, system designers have focused primarily on supporting applications and user access to integrated ubiquitous computing environments or “smart spaces” within single administrative or network domains. We believe that the wider deployment of ubicomp systems will be more viable when applications can interact with devices, services and sensor information independent of their environme...
